Manaslu, meaning “Mountain of The Spirit”, is the eighth highest mountain in the world at 8,163 metres (26,781 ft) above sea level. Manaslu was first climbed on May 9, 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu. Mt. Manaslu is the most accessible 8,000 meter peak in Nepal. Technically it is slightly more difficult than Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma and relatively easier than any other 8000m peaks.  Hi On Life Adventures operates Manaslu Expedition during the autumn climbing season, over a 45 day period.

We ascend via the North East Face, setting up four camps along the way. The climbing route involves snow slopes of moderate inclination. There is one short steep slope above Camp One. The angle of inclination picks up towards Camp Four, where we climb on fixed ropes through a series of short steep climbs to arrive at a col which is used as Camp IV. Summit day involves climbing through a series of moderately inclined snow slopes and plateaus. The final 20 meters climb is along a sharp snowy ridge to an airy summit with magnificent views.

Hi On Life Adventures Base Camp is a luxurious operation, with single cottage tent, heated dining tent with comfortable tables and chairs, communication tent with laptops, Sat Phones and radios, solar power, cooks tent, toilet facilities and hot shower tent.

About Manaslu region:

This region provides a rich variety of landscape and vegetation as it comprises sub-tropical Himalayan foothills to arid Trans-Himalayan high pastures bordering Tibet, covering six climatic zones. The Manaslu valley is also a sanctuary to many highly endangered animals, including Snow leopards and Pandas. Over 110 species of birds, 33 mammals, 11 butterflies and 3 reptiles have been recorded in this area. An estimated 1,500-2,000 plant species grow here of which many are valued as medicinal herbs and aromatic plants.

Program

Mt. Manaslu is the most accessible 8,000 meter peak in Nepal. Technically it is slightly more difficult than Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma and relatively easier than any other 8000m peaks.
Hi On Life Adventures operates Manaslu Expedition during the autumn climbing season, over a 45 day period.

The trip starts in Kathmandu where we spend a couple of nights, during which we will do a full kit check with the team, attend briefings at the Department of Tourism and a last minute shopping to buy any equipment that may still be needed.

From Kathmandu we take a helicopter flight to Samagaon at 3550m. The direct helicopter flight to Samagaon not only makes the expedition 8 days shorter, but also minimizes the chances of injuries during the eight days of off the beaten trek from Arughat to Samagaon. We utilize these saved 8 days on the mountain for better acclimatization. At Samagaon we have a few days rest for acclimatization, while our crew ferries gears and set up our Base Camp. After being well acclimatized and rested, we head off to base Camp, which involves a 4-5 hour trek along a steep trail through a forest next to the hanging glaciers and ice falls.

The climb:

We ascend via the North East Face, utilizing four camps along the way. During the entire climb from Base Camp to the summit our team of Sherpa guides will fix ropes, break trail and make every effort to assist the group with the objective to reach the summit.

From Base Camp to Camp 1: The trek from Base Camp to Camp 1 involves climbing over grassy slopes, rock slabs and moraine until we reach crampon point. From here we follow a crevassed glacier with small ice steps to Camp 1 at 5500m. We climb the last part of the climb to Camp 1 on fixed lines.

Camp 1 to Camp 2: Involves climbing through steep slopes on fixed lines and is expected to take between from 5 to 7 hours to arrive at Camp 2 at 6,300m. The views from camp 2 really are breath taking, and the peak of the mountain gets visibly closer.

Camp 2 to Camp 3: Straight forward climb snow slope with gentle gradient. It takes roughly 3 hours to reach Camp 3 which is at 6700m.

Camp 3 to Camp 4: Involves 550m of strenuous climbing on steep slopes relying on the fixed ropes which takes around 4 hours before you reach Camp 4 at 7,450m.

Camp 4 to Summit: Summit day will start around midnight and the climb should take about 6-7 hrs. The climbing itself is not technical. The first part of the climb in the dark ascends gradually with short head walls. Soon we reach the false summit where we take a good break, change Oxygen if required and then climb the last part to the summit on an exposed ridge. The views are unforgettable.
After the summit, we descend to Camp 2 and the following day to base Camp for a well-earned celebration. A day is spent packing up Base Camp then we trek down to Samagaon from where we take a helicopter back to Kathmandu.

On the Mountain: We have highly experienced Climbing Sherpas, and we provide one climbing Sherpa to one climbers. Our Sherpas will fix the route, set up the higher camps, as well as carry the group equipment, such as tents, stoves, food etc. They also help with high altitude equipment transport, carrying your extra weight both up and down the mountain. You do not need to carry a heavy rucksack during the climb.

Cooks and Food: Our skillful and hard working cooks prepare three hot meals each day with a very healthy diet of fresh vegetables, cheeses, eggs, and fresh meat as well, tinned fruits, tinned meats and fish (all meats and fish are prepared separately out of respect for the vegetarians in our midst) and a high dose of carbohydrates from breads, rice and pastas. We have weatherproof kitchens and heated dining tents, with comfortable chairs and tables.

Detailed itinerary:

27th Aug: Arrive Kathmandu/ transfer to Hotel

Once you reach KTM airport and finish with the immigration and custom formalities be prepared to confront the confusion outside the airport which is common in most of the south Asian countries. As you walk out of the Exit door into the passenger pick up area you will see hundreds of people with different sign boards in their hands, taxi drivers looking for fares, hotel touts looking for customers and porters trying to help with the luggage for tips. Please remain calm and do not walk out of the restricted area into the crowd straight away. Remain there and try to find the Hi On Life’s sign board. Once you spot it, walk straight to the signboard and identify yourself. From here we will take care of you.
When you arrive to your hotel you will be briefed about your activities and “do’s and don’ts” while your stay in Kathmandu. We will also collect some documents from you. Please have the following things handy when arriving.

  • Travel/ Medical Insurance (photo copy)
  • Photocopy of your passport.

In the evening we will go for a traditional Nepali dinner at Kathmandu’s finest Nepali restaurant to end the day.

28th Aug: Briefing at the Department of Tourism with government officials/ Expedition briefing/ final preparations

After breakfast you will be taken for a half day city tour where you will be visiting some historical temples and monuments. You will end your sightseeing with a lunch. After your lunch you will visit the Department of Tourism to meet the Government official for a formal briefing. You will then return to your hotel and your Expedition Leader will give you your briefing and issue you your ‘trek pack’ consisting of 2 duffel bag, sleeping bag, inner liner for your sleeping bag. Your afternoon is free for you to do your packing and purchasing your last minute items for your expedition.

29th Aug: Helicopter flight to Samagaon

  • Elevation on Samagaon: 3550m

From Kathmandu airport we fly to Samagaon on a 5 seater B12 helicopter. Upon arrival at Samagaon, we will meet our expedition crew check in to our lodge.

30th Aug to 1st Sept: Acclimatization treks around Samagaon, re-packing.

During this period, our crew will be ferrying loads Expedition gears and setting up base Camp. You can utilize this time to take acclimatization hikes in the valley. We will also re organize our bags and equipment.

2nd Sept: Trek to Manaslu Base Camp

  • Elevation of Base Camp: 4800m
  • Trek: 6 to 7 hours

3rd Sept to 6th Sept: Acclimatization hikes to Crampon point, training, and organization at Base Camp.

During this period our team of Climbing Sherpas will set up higher camps. You can utilize this period to take acclimatization hikes to crampon point and also polish up your climbing skills during the climbing training and safety orientations. You can also arrange the gears that has to be taken to the mountain and separate the ones that can be left behind at Base Camp.

Healthy and trouble free holiday

There are no compulsory vaccinations required for entering Nepal. However please consult a doctor for vaccination against Typhoid, Meningitis, polio, and hepatitis. If you have special dietary requirements or allergies, please through your agent, give us a list of what you can
and can’t eat so that we can provide proper food for you.

If you are undergoing a course of prescription medicine, please ensure that you have sufficient supplies for the entire holiday. Some types of drugs including antimalarials have side affects at high altitude; therefore please consult your doctors regarding these drugs. The places you trek are mosquito free and there has been no report on malaria in Kathmandu for the past couple of decades.

Insure yourself

Hi On Life Adventures strictly follow the policy, No Insurance= No expedition! We highly recommend you to take a comprehensive Personal Travel Insurance with Rescue before leaving home. It is mandatory that your insurance covers helicopter evacuation, even above 6000 m and incase of unforeseen incident they should cover long line re

Money Matters

The ideal currency to bring with you is US$ or Euro. There are Atm machines in Kathmandu where you can draw money as per your bank limit.

In Kathmandu: Each meal will cost around 4 to 6 US$. Plus 10 to 20 US $ for your taxis if you wish to go around the city.

On trek: you will need around 5 to 6 US $ per day. This money is for your hot showers, chocolates, soft drinks and beers etc and also for small donations in the monasteries.

Tipping

Although tipping is entirely optional and personal matter the following is recommended as a guideline

In Kathmandu: for bellboys, waiters and porters 50 to 100 Nepali Rupees

On the trek: At the end of the trek it is a customary to tip the field staff. The recommended amount is 250 to 300 US$ / member. The Group leader will organize that for you.

Please Note: Climbing Sherpa Bonus is extra which is 1000 USD as a summit bonus for your Sherpa who will accompany you to the summit.

Some Do’s and Don’ts

Nepalese people treat visitors as special guests. Although they will never rebuke you publicly for unknowingly offending them, we must consider their culture.

While in Nepal and in Tibet please observe the following:

  • Full or partial nudity is not accepted.
  • Over display of affection between men and women, especially in temples and monasteries are discouraged.
  • Please remove your shoes before entering monasteries and temples.
  • Never point the soles of your feet at a person or shrine.
  • Many Hindu temples are closed to non-Hindus. Please ask before entering.
  • Locals walk around the Mani walls and Stupas in a clockwise direction as a respect and they expect you to do the same although it is not compulsory.

Grading

Our grading system for trekking:

There are many different factors that contribute to the difficulty of a particular trip
Our grading are based on various factors such as length of trek and walking day, trail conditions, maximum altitude and average altitude, elevation gain/loss per day, prevailing weather conditions, temperature range, remoteness and general level of comfort.
Although we have tried to make our grading system as clear as possible, it cannot take into account your personal interests, abilities or experience. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please contact us at info@hionlifeadventures.com

Grade A: Leisure

These adventure tours are our least demanding trips suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. These trips may involve long drives usually on private transport. Sightseeing trips are conducted on foot. The itinerary may also take you to remote places with basic lodging facilities and may also involve a day or two of hiking. We expect you to carry a small back pack weighing about 4 to 5 kgs.
Recommended preparation: Walking on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

Grade B: Easy to moderate

These adventures involve trekking between 7 to 10 days in remote areas where facilities are often basic. These trips involve some camping or basic lodging. The trekking days are often between 3 to 6 hours of walking each day on good trails with plenty of time for sightseeing. The itineraries often include 1 or 2 rest days. The trails are generally well defined and relatively easy, but it doesn’t mean it will be a walk in the park. In the Himalayas, flat trail are extremely rare sights, so there will be plenty of ascents and descents on rocky terrains and often on stony steps. The altitudes are moderate and rarely go above 3800m. The average daily ascents and descents will be about 300m to 400m with perhaps an odd day ascending/ descending about 800m. There are no extremes of weather and the daytime temperatures generally do not get lower than 5C with exceptional cases during bad weather when it can get down to 0C.

Recommended preparation: Walking or jogging 45 mins to 1 hour for at least two times a week on undulating terrain or on a tread mill with inclined angle for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Grade C: Moderate

These treks are slightly more difficult. Our moderate treks are between 11 to 15 days in remote areas with camping or basic lodging. The trekking days are often between 4 to 7 hours of walking each day on good trails with plenty of time for sightseeing. The itineraries often include 1 or 2 rest days. The trails are generally well defined but with plenty of ascents and descents on rocky terrains and often on stony steps. The altitudes are moderate and rarely go above 4500m. The average daily ascents and descents will be about 300m to 500m with occasional harder days ascending/ descending about 800m. There are no extremes of weather and the daytime temperatures generally do not get lower than 5C with exceptional cases during bad weather when it can get down to -5C.

Recommended preparation: Walking or jogging 45 mins to 1 hour for at least two times a week on undulating terrain or on a tread mill with inclined angle for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Grade D: Challenging

These adventures are more challenging and remote and with altitudes up to 5600m. Our challenging treks are between 13 to 24 days in remote areas with camping or basic lodging. The trekking days are often between 5 to 7 hours of walking each day with some days involving crossing a pass with up to 10 hours walking. Generally the trails are well defined, but there will be days which involve climbing steep rocky terrains at high altitudes and crossing icy and rocky glaciers in harsh weather conditions.
The average daily ascents and descents will be about 300m to 500m with a few harder days ascending/ descending about 1000m. The itineraries often include rest days after such big ascents.
Temperatures can get below Zero in the daytime at high altitudes and can fall down to -10C at night.

Recommended preparation: Stamina is essential, as walking days are long. We recommend previous trekking experience, preferably at altitude. Walking or jogging 45 mins to 1 hour for at least two times a week on undulating terrain or on a tread mill with inclined angle for at least 3 months prior to departure. Cycling is recommended. Long day hikes on weekends with a daypack in variable weather conditions is also recommended.

Grading system for Expeditions:

A realistically chosen trip maximizes both your enjoyment of the experience, as well as your chances of summit success. Selection of a trip that is beyond your ability could result in uncomfortable experiences. You might end up having the leader not taking you on the climb for your own safety and for the safety of the other team members.

Therefore to let you make a more realistic selection of your mountain, we have categorized each mountain into 2 tired grading systems which describes the technical difficulty (I-V) and fitness (A-E) required for each expedition.

Technical Difficulty

I          Straightforward climbing/ scrambling on low angle snow/ rocks. Previous climbing experience is not essential. No ropes required.

II         Involves glacial travel on ropes with ice axe and crampons. Previous experience of Ice axe and crampon comes in handy but not a compulsory.

III        Involves ice climbing on short sections of snow or ice up to about 50 degrees. Previous snow/ ice climbing experience are essential.

IV         Good all-round climbing ability required. Involves low grade rock climbing and long, steep snow and ice slopes over 50 degrees.

V          Difficult climbing on very steep ice or technically difficult rock. It is suitable only for competent and experienced mountaineers who have successfully summited technical mountains above 6000m.

Fitness

A             Good basic fitness required.  Ability to walk 6 to 8 hour over undulating terrain with a few punchy uphill climbs carrying a pack up to 6kg in weight.

B             Good cardio-vascular fitness required. Regular training, by running, hiking and perhaps some gym work is essential. Expect to be able to do 8 hour days in hilly and often steep train, carrying a pack of 6-10kg in weight with the occasional extra-long day.

C             High level of fitness coupled with physical endurance required with regular training as part of your normal routine. Expect days of up to 8 hours and longer while carrying a pack up to 8-12kg in weight. Summit night could be easily in excess of 12 hours.

D             Superlative fitness is called for. Climbs of this grade are exceptionally strenuous and some weight loss is inevitable. Regular, long and intense physical training is required for preparation. Expect 10-15 hours of climbing in testing weather conditions (especially summit day) carrying up to 10-15kg in weight.

E              Extreme physical effort at extreme altitude which requires arduous preparation based on your experience of previous trips. You will be pushed physically to the limit and then beyond. Be prepared for very long, sustained days with 10 – 12 hours on a regular basis and more than 15 hours on the summit day. Discomfort to achieve your goal is to be expected.

What are the booking procedures, terms and conditions?

The following procedures, terms and conditions apply if you are joining one of our trip.

Booking:

At the bottom of each tour/trek/ expedition page that you wish to participate, you can click the link to book that trip and you will come to a page with instructions on how to book a trip with us. We will then send you an invoice for deposit payment of 250 USD, which is non-refundable. Once we receive this payment we will send you a confirmation on your reservation of the trip.

Balance Payments:

The balance payment is to be made at least 45 days prior to departure, payable by bank account transfer. If the balance is not paid when due, Hi On Life Adventures reserves the right to regard the reservation as canceled.

Cancellations & Refunds:

In case you should cancel your reservation, the following cancellation charges apply:

Exceptions to these policies cannot be made for any reason. However, if you wish to transfer from one trip to another, we are happy to assist you at no extra charge, provided that it is done before 60 days prior to the trip start date. Thereafter, our cancellation policy applies. Hi On Life Adventures reserves the right to cancel a trip for any reason. In such an instance, we will refund all payments received, which will be regarded as full settlement.
